I just finished up this American coot for Cliff P.  One more coot to mount and I will be all done with waterfowl.  Then it will be on to turkeys, coyotes and bears, oh my!

Week of 26 August 2013

Today, I was able to put the finishing touches on the sneaky grey fox for Corine L.  The rest of this week will consist of  prepping 4 turkeys so I can get their heads to the freeze drier.  Next week, I will be mounting a swan for Luke H. and 2 American coots for Cliff P.

NC Taxidermist Association Competition 2013

I went to my second taxidermy competition of the year this week end.  I entered 3 pieces for judging which included the habitat that I created for this piece, a reproduction cotton mouth snake and a drake wood duck.  I recieved first place ribbons for all 3 pieces!  If that wasn’t great enough, I also to my suprise, recieved the Best of Category Award in the Professional Waterfowl Division for my wood duck!  I could not believe it when they called my name for that award during the awards banquet.  These awards haven’t made me complacent with the quality of my work, but have lit a fire in me to improve my skills and the quality of my mounts for competitions and my clients.  Pictures of my competiton piece will be posted shortly, so check back often!

The fresh catch of the day!  Joe W.’s 44 inch blue catfish.  All it needs now is a few days to dry and a hanger, then it will be ready for his wall!

Here are a trio of green-winged teal drakes for Luke H.  It may seem like I haven’t been mounting much lately, but I have been working on a competition piece for August 1st.  I’m going all out for this one!  I can’t show pictures yet, but I will say that is the biggest piece I’ve done so far and it incorporates 3 different species of animals!  Wish me luck!
